When deciding on a vineyard, our primary criterion was the preservation of an old vineyard. By the mid-nineties, the planted vines in La Consulta decreased from 18,000 to 6,000. Two-thirds of the old vines had been removed for other crops or left fallow. We believe old vines in the right place have a unique character. Our 68-year-old vineyard Don Eugenio, is located in La Consulta, Mendoza, Argentina.
It is generally accepted that the Uco Valley is the premier grape growing area in Argentina today. La Consulta is a small wine-growing sub-region in the southern Uco Valley of Mendoza. La Consulta has the qualities we were looking for, particularly because the Tunuyan River carries fresh water directly from the Andes. Due to the proximity of the Tunuyan River the terrain in the area is largely alluvial. This clay rich soil topped with a sandy surface provides good drainage, allowing the vines to grow deep, strong roots.
